Crypt Gallery Winter Market

Open Daily 10:00am - 4:00pm

Here are some of the makers exhibiting, further details to be added in due course.

Caroline Chalton Hellyer

A studio potter based in Lewes, East Sussex.

Having studied metalwork and ceramics at university, before working in metal for a number of years, I was attracted back to clay by its immediacy and exciting versatility. Ceramics provided the opportunity to explore new structures, colours and techniques.

I make hand-thrown ceramics which combine practicality with innovative shapes and tactile, vibrant glazes, drawing inspiration from natural forms and textures.

My designs range from jugs and espresso cups, to vases and bowls. I am always learning and this is reflected in my work. Each new piece marks my evolving understanding of clay. I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy making it!

Dominic Parrette

Traditional and contemporary frame baskets and woven forms made from locally sourced materials using traditional techniques. Dominic’s work is inspired by the Sussex landscape in which he works.

Heather Bigmore

As a young mum in the early 70’s I joined a day class in enamelling as a way to relax after chasing after 3 small boys. And what a revelation it turned out to be! I went on to teach at evening classes where, hopefully, my enthusiasm inspired others. In later years, following a move to Seaford, I enjoyed exploring a different creative medium, silversmithing, which enabled me to develop more intricate and innovative designs.

Su Douglas

Sue is a local artisan specialising in Needle Felting which is is the art of sculpting raw and fine wool with special barbed needles.  Stabbing the wool over and over again, meshes the wool fibres together, creating a firm, textile object. Her early work involved the sculpting of 2D animal figures, predominantly dogs which were set in box frames. Sue has diversified into producing 3D standalone sculptures, including such things as flying hares, sardines in tins, swans and the occasional comical human couples in naturist pose!

Alison Sutton

I make lamp worked glass beads in my tiny workshop, The Growlery. I use a blow torch fuelled with oxygen and propane to melt and shape rods of mostly Italian and German glass into beads which I then decorate using a variety of techniques. The beads are then annealed in a kiln to make them durable before I clean them by hand. It is a very labour-intensive process but I love the meditative nature of what I do.

I am inspired by the colour combinations I see in Nature, particularly when walking in The South Downs and along the glorious Sussex coast, and when visiting historic houses and gardens. I am also fascinated by the idea that beads can survive through time, often being found in graves and ancient places throughout the world and in many cultures, and have been experimenting with the theme of "Lost and Found" in recent months.

I am part of The Blooming Bloomsbury Collective, a group of artists and others who met whilst working at Charleston House Museum and who have supported each other through the pandemic, redundancy and beyond... #friendshipmatters

Alison Payne

I’m Alison and my business is Eden and Soul Beauty. I make vegan skincare and toiletry products from my studio in my garden in Seaford. My training is around using essential oils and other active ingredients to target certain areas/offer different experiences. I buy ingredients from a supplier who enable me to return plastic containers to them to reuse, reducing the impact my small business has on the environment. All of my product jars/bottles are refillable and I offer refills. All the ingredients I use are from the UK.

I started my business in August 2020, as a way of relaxing during COVID, as I also work as a self employed personal care assistant.

Scott Brenman is an artist and designer. His paintings and designs combine bold colours, clean lines and hard edges.

He has a keen affection for East Sussex, so it's no surprise its landscapes and landmarks feature regularly in his work. This December, Scott will be bringing a selection of paintings, prints and cards to the Crypt Gallery Winter Market. For more examples of Scott's work.

Debbie McDermott

A few years ago, I attended an evening class, purely out of curiosity, for stained glass and become immediately hooked!  After a few practices my first work of traditional stained glass was for my bathroom window….. quite ambitious for a beginner!  I was delighted with the results.

Since then, I have learned other methods of creating stained glass : appliqué, which is similar to mosaic, and copper foil. These can be used to create more delicate pieces.

I like to use unusual frames to house my stained glass and have trawled reclamation yards, boot fairs and house sales, using items such as an old metal garden sieve, an extraction unit and various wooden and metal frames.

All my work is unique and individual and I am always open to suggestions or personal commissions.
