Ruth Hannah Stirton is a contemporary abstract expressionist, and Maelstrom is the first major showing of her work. Using a mix of charcoal, graphite and acrylic paint, Stirton draws on her intuition to shed light on her inner world. She makes huge, energy-filled pieces that explode into the world. Set against these are smaller, more focused, intentional pieces where she has used printmaking and painting processes to explore elements of the maelstrom. This exhibition juxtaposes these wild, raw creations with pieces that show a quieter understanding of the energy within.
